Hi and welcome to Senior Safety Advisor website. Helping keep seniors safe has been a concern and a passion of mine for a number of years. I feel that many seniors are overlooked by society. There are many ways that we can help our seniors, “stay safe in place”, with simple changes to their homes…
A Little story about Shirley.
Shirley was a friend of my mother’s and recently lost her husband. She lived in a large house and it was a lot for her to take care of. I had been in the business of fixing up homes and was looking to do something different and more meaningful.
Her eye sight was failing her, making it hard for her to move around safely. She was in her 80’s and used a walker. She was fortunate to have a large home which made it easy to move around.
Still, there was lot of changes that had to be made. We added grab bars, alarm system, modified the shower etc… I would come once a week. Shirley would have “to do list” ready and I would complete the list. This was our arrangement for 17 years.
The last 3 years in her home were tough for her. She became overwhelmed with the duties of being a home owner, and her health was not very good. One day, she said, what do you think about assisted living? I told her that you and I have done a good job, but I know it is getting harder for you to stay on top of things.
Assisted living will take the heavy burden off you. I think you are making the right choice… She found a nice place and made many new friends. I visit Shirley’s most Sundays at her new place. She seems happy and worry free and still writes me a to do list, a very small one…
Helping other’s makes you feel good!
Helping Shirley made me feel good and I also found out there was a need for this type of work. Word of mouth spread and I began helping other seniors with their homes. I am always amazed when I walk into a home for the first time. Just a few simple changes that anyone can do, can make a huge difference for a senior. Everyone knows, or has an elderly person in their family. It only takes a few minutes to check on them and it will make you feel great.
Age safely in place.
“Aging safely in place!” That is what most seniors want. The ability to stay in their homes an remain independent as long as they can. To be comfortable, loved, respected and to stay engaged. Let’s face it, we are all aging. It is not a bad thing, it is just a part of life. Hug a senior today or maybe give them a call. A simple, “how are you doing”, can mean so much to a person who spends a lot of time alone.
