My name is David Sides and I work in the Public Outreach Department of The Pleural Mesothelioma Center.
As you may be aware, pleural mesothelioma is a deadly form of cancer caused from asbestos exposure. Due to the long latency period of mesothelioma, approximately 20-50 years, about 80% of those who are diagnosed with this terrible disease are seniors. Our organization works 1-on-1 with these individuals to help them find local doctors, treatment centers and support groups, all for absolutely no cost to the patient.
What is Pleural Mesothelioma and What You Need to Know!
Pleural mesothelioma is a disease that ravages the senior community. This cancer surrounds the lining of the lungs and is caused from exposure to asbestos. It takes 20-50 years to develop, making over 80% of sufferers senior citizens.
Many people are familiar with asbestos and for all the wrong reasons. There was a time when asbestos was deemed the ‘miracle mineral’ for its resistance to heat and fire. Naturally, manufacturers began putting asbestos in practically anything from home goods to military aircraft carriers. It wasn’t until years later that its cancer-causing properties became known and even after these discoveries were made, many companies did not cease their production of goods with asbestos.
Unfortunately, the masses were the ones that suffered. Pleural mesothelioma is still a relatively rare disease, but if it develops the prognosis is very grim. Research shows a pleural mesothelioma prognosis is on average between 1-2 years after diagnosis. Of course, the earlier the cancer is caught the better the outlook.
Who is at Risk?
Those most at risk of developing any form of mesothelioma usually had extensive exposure to asbestos. This makes former occupational workers in industries like construction or shipping the most at risk. Also, military veterans compromise nearly 1/3 of all mesothelioma cases due to the military’s high reliance on the mineral.
How is Pleural Mesothelioma Treated?
Like other cancers, there is still no known cure for pleural mesothelioma, however there are treatment options that can improve survival rates. Treatment options include chemotherapy, surgery, or radiation.
Sometimes, the best approach is a combination of treatment options. Depending on what stage your cancer is in will determine the best treatment options. Surgery has been the most effective, yet not all patients qualify, so chemotherapy is the most received treatment.
Part of the issue with this cancer is by the time symptoms are noticeable the cancer is far-along. Therefore, it’s extremely important to seek out medical help if you believe you have faced heavy exposure to asbestos earlier in your life. Symptoms of the disease include fatigue, coughing up blood, and trouble swallowing.
